Our story

We built the guide we wish we had when we arrived

“Arriving in Canada is exciting. But the financial system — the banks, the credit score rules, the TFSA, the CRA — can feel completely overwhelming. We have been there. That’s why we built this.”

NewcomerSavings.ca was founded by Edward A, a newcomer to Canada based in Toronto, Ontario. Like thousands of newcomers every year, Edward arrived with no Canadian credit history, no knowledge of TFSAs or RRSPs, and no trusted source to turn to for honest financial guidance.

The content available online was either written for Americans, buried in jargon, or clearly written to sell a product rather than genuinely help. After making several expensive financial mistakes in his first months, Edward decided to build the resource he wished had existed.

Today, NewcomerSavings.ca is run by a dedicated editorial team of Canadian finance writers and researchers. Every guide we publish is thoroughly researched, written in plain English, and reviewed before it goes live. We cite official Canadian sources — the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), and direct information from financial institutions.

Our mission is simple: help every newcomer to Canada build a strong financial life from day one — without the expensive mistakes.

Our reach

NewcomerSavings.ca is read by newcomers from over 40 countries who have chosen Canada as their home — from recent international students and skilled workers to permanent residents and new citizens. Our guides cover every stage of the financial journey from opening your first bank account to filing your first Canadian tax return.

How we work
Our editorial standards

Every guide published on NewcomerSavings.ca goes through a strict research and review process. Here is exactly how our team works.

1
Primary source research
We cite official sources including the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), and direct product information from financial institutions — not third-party summaries.
2
Editorial review before publishing
Every article is reviewed by our editorial team for accuracy, completeness and clarity before it goes live. We never publish unreviewed content.
3
Regular updates
Financial products, rates and regulations change constantly. Our team reviews and updates every guide at least every 6 months. Every article displays a “Last updated” date.
4
Editorial independence
Our reviews and recommendations are never influenced by affiliate relationships or advertising. We recommend the best product for our readers, even if it earns us a lower commission.
5
Plain English always
We write for newcomers — not finance professionals. Every guide is written so that anyone, regardless of their financial background, can understand and act on the advice.
6
Full transparency on affiliates
Every article containing affiliate links displays a clear disclosure at the top. We are fully transparent about how we make money. Read our complete Affiliate Disclosure.
Our promise

How we make money
Transparent about our affiliate relationships

NewcomerSavings.ca is free for everyone to read. To keep it that way, some links on this site are affiliate links — meaning we may earn a small commission if you click a link and sign up for a product, at no extra cost to you.

Affiliate relationships never influence our editorial team’s reviews or recommendations. We recommend the best product for newcomers regardless of what it earns us. You can read our complete Affiliate Disclosure here.
